Alfred “Cooter” Foster Welling, Jr., 69, died August 14, 2021 in Fort Pierce, Florida.
Cooter was born and raised in Fort Pierce, Florida where he was very well known as an amazing painter and an even more amazing friend. Cooter was of the last graduating class from Dan McCarty High School in 1970. He was an awesome son, brother, uncle, dad, and granddad. He would do everything in his power to help anyone he loved or cared for. If he didn’t like you, you knew it and there was a good reason for it. He was a great judge of character. He was pretty famous for his boiled peanuts “Cooters Nuts”; they were the best in town. In his younger years he loved motorcycles and fast cars. He started off his working life working with his dad as a mechanic at the Texaco Station on the corner of US1 and Boston Ave in the early 70’s. After a few years he moved to start his own business as a painter where he flourished quickly. He stayed painting in the Fort Pierce area his whole life. He loved fishing, his family and friends, and his ice-cold beer. He will be missed by so many and never forgotten. The footprints he left on this town will never fade and the impact he had on so many lives changed this town for the better. May his legacy live on forever.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #40 and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Post #3582.
Survivors include his son, Alfred “Skip” Foster Welling, III; grandson, Knox Christopher Welling; sister, Sandra Nelson; and niece, Kimberely Merritt all of Fort Pierce, Florida. He was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Foster Welling, Sr., mother, Florence “Evelyn” Welling and brother, Robert Joseph Tyler.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, September 19, 2021 from 1:00-3:00 PM at the American Legion Post #40, 810 S. US Hwy 1, Fort Pierce, FL 34950.
