Bertha Nolan Butts, age 99.93, passed away at The Broadmoor, Fort Pierce, FL on Wednesday,
December 24, 2014. She was born on January 18, 1915 in Tuolumne, California, a daughter to the late Mary Louise Nolan (maiden name Putney) and William Gus Nolan.

Bertha was predeceased by her husband, Rev. Harold D. Butts (February 24, 2003), and her daughter Martha R. Loveland (May 22, 2005).

Bertha is survived by a son, William D. Butts of Port St. Lucie, FL and a sister, Wilma Hopke of Laddonia, MO; 3 grandchildren, Kimberly R. Ferris of Boca Raton, FL, Edie Hindman of Indianola, IA and Billy Bough of Indianola, IA.

Bertha’s family moved from California to Missouri when she was a small child. She was raised on a Missouri farm near Middletown, MO along with eight brothers and sisters. Bertha married Harold D. Butts, who was raised on a neighboring farm on July 30, 1932 and married for 71 years. Harold and Bertha pastored the church in Ashland, MO for 4 years while Harold pursued his education at the University of MO and Theological studies at Bible College in Columbia, MO. In 1938 they were transferred to the South Iowa Conference & served 8 pastoral charges as an ordained minister across the State of Iowa from Riverton, IA in SW Iowa to Ocheyedan, Iowa in the NE part of Iowa. After 42 years under appointment by the United Methodist Church, Bertha & Harold retired in 1976, and moved to Lake Okoboji, IA. In 1982 Bertha and her husband moved to Florida.

Bertha loved the outdoors, loved camping, fishing (usually caught the largest Bass if any fish were caught), playing the piano, singing in the choir, she was an accomplished seamstress, liked to paint, has several oil paintings, loved playing games and entertaining people in her home. Bertha was a member of the Community United Methodist Church, Fort Pierce.
Bertha had a kind and loving heart that served her well as a minister’s wife, homemaker, teacher of her children & witness for God & Jesus her Lord and Savior to all she met. Everyone loved her and her sweet smile will be missed by all who knew her.
