Betty Jean (Jones) Morris, 81, passed away unexpectedly on February 17, 2018 in Fort Pierce, Florida. She was preceded in death by her husband, LTC (R) James W. Morris, Jr., her parents, three brothers, and a grandson, Justin Scott Morris.
Betty was born in Cheraw, South Carolina and moved to Fort Pierce in 1949. She met the love of her life, LTC (R) James W. Morris (Jim), Jr. in 6th grade at Dan McCarty Middle School, and the two high school sweethearts were married in 1957. They soon began a life of service in the U.S. Army, where she raised their four children. The Morrises lived in a variety of camps, posts, stations, and bases, often spending many years overseas. As Jim was promoted to new and more challenging assignments, Betty was kept busy with raising the children and supporting Jim with things like the Officers’ Wives’ Club and helping others throughout the community.
Upon Jim’s retirement from the Army, Betty, Jim and their minor child, Constance, moved back to Fort Pierce for a short time where Betty worked as a Real Estate Agent for Bemenderfer Realty. In early 1988 Betty, Jim and Constance moved to Metairie, Louisiana before moving back to Fort Pierce permanently in 1993, where she went to work as the Librarian at the St. Lucie County Jail on Rock Road. Betty retired permanently in 2006, and she and Jim dedicated their lives to improving their hometown and neighborhood. Betty and Jim were members of Saint Andrews Lutheran Church in Port Saint Lucie, and Betty served as the altar guild leader for more than 17 years, for both Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Pierce and Saint Andrews Lutheran Church.
Betty was an active member of the Elkettes of Elks Lodge #1520 where she was proud to call her fellow Elkettes lifetime friends. Betty served on multiple committees and was an avid fund raiser for the lodge. Betty enjoyed the company of many friends, and they gathered weekly to play cards and talk.
Survivors include her children, Candice Pierce-Watson of Fort Pierce, James W. Morris III of Boynton Beach, Kenneth Lee (Kathy) Morris of Vero Beach, Constance Maureen (Bill) Medici of Crossville, TN, and Paula Mascara of Fort Pierce; 13 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.
