Beverly Perry Spencer, 89, from Hiannis, MA passed away October 31, 2024.
Before women’s lib, before feminism, and when woke had another 60 years to arrive, Beverly, a dear sister, crazy auntie, faithful wife and my loving mother shattered glass ceiling after glass ceiling.
Saving and restoring crumbling historic buildings in the Mexican War Streets in Pittsburgh, developing wasteland into parks and recs, and being instrumental in the land purchase for the future construction of Three Rivers Stadium, Beverly, our sister, mom, aunt and friend was a successful and decisive female business owner.
During all that, incredibly, she made the time to bring up two fabulous and strong daughters, maintain a long marriage with her entrepreneurial husband, and still work full time.
We easily remember all that.
What we often overlook, forget even, is the quiet stuff. The little things with huge value.
Her work with her therapy dog, Beauregarde, with whom she visited veterans in Maine, and others in need of a little cheer in Florida paying back all she could.
Her support of many and various Pittsburgh charities, including PBS Pittsburgh with her own ‘Katherine Hepburn style’ brand; a mix of vermouth-dry wit, great style and razor sharp social observation.
Her willingness and desire, even into her seventies and eighties to retain her enthusiasm for ‘paying it forward’, finding time and the energy to call upon charities in Florida, where she spent her autumn years, keeping us all on our toes whilst doing it.
Her much-used catch phrase, following a hard decision or tough view proffered on any given topic, which we will now commit to family usage forever, summed her up.
‘’ and that’s all there is to it…’’
In short, and in closing, a very special woman, person, lady, and mom.
