Bruce N. Ander

December 11, 1943 — March 26, 2016

Bruce N. Ander succumbed to Pancreatic Cancer at the Clinica Biblica Hospital in San Jose, Costa Rica on March 26, 2016, at the age of 72. He was preceded in death by his mother Nancy Drake Ander and his adoptive father Dales T. Ander. He is survived by his uncle Duke Drake of Wickenburg AZ, his half-uncle Donald Powell of Savannah GA, his half-brothers Mark E. Ander of Ft. Pierce FL and Brent L. Ander of Ellsworth ME and a number of Drake and Powell cousins.
Bruce was born in Governor’s Island in New York, NY on December 11 1943. He spent his early years in New York City, Bronxville, Miami, Gouldsboro PA and Short Hills NJ where he graduated from Milburn High School in 1962. He attended Maine Maritime Academy in Castine ME as a Merchant Marine Midshipman before completing his BS degree from Jacksonville University in 1967. He spent his early career years as a marine engineer in Florida and the Southeast. In a mid-life correction he undertook the heavy training required to become an investment advisor. He retired from Prudential Securities in 2010 as he repositioned himself for new adventures in Costa Rica.

In Costa Rica he was able to indulge himself in his lifelong passion for deep sea fishing in the world class fishing grounds off the Pacific Coasts of Costa Rica and Panama. When the fishing action slowed he spent several seasons placer mining for gold in southern Costa Rica. He was an avid reader of both scientific fact and fiction and an amateur astronomer.

Bruce was a man of strong opinions with a great love for life who enjoyed the company of others. He loved the outdoors, whether dirt biking to Alaska or fishing for the big ones in Bimini or Los Suenos. He will be missed.

Bruce’s ashes will be committed to the sea, in a private service with relatives and close friends in June.
