Captain Kenneth V. McClurken, 72, passed away in Stuart on his birthday, January 21st, after a sudden illness.Born in South Bend, Indiana, Ken led a varied and interesting life. In the 1950’s, he was Indiana State Light Heavyweight Olympic Weightlifting Champion for 9 years straight. In addition to being a Master Carpenter, he was also one of the very first PADI SCUBA instructors, and a published underwater photographer. After moving to Florida in the 1970’s, he skippered various yachts, including the Regina, as well as the well-known Lady Stuart drift fishing boat out of the Manatee Pocket.
Especially since his retirement in the mid 1990’s, Ken’s great passion was cycling. While in his sixties, he completed the 380-mile “Ride the Rockies” event on his bicycle. He and his wife, Barbara, frequently traveled to cycling events throughout Florida.In addition to Barbara, Kenneth is survived by their children Kathleen of Vail, Colorado and Seneca, South Carolina; Douglas of Stuart and Jensen Beach, Florida; and Donna of Jupiter, Florida.Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Martin & St. Lucie, P.O.
