Carol “Lil” Vassar
Port Saint Lucie, Florida
Another angel donned her wings with the passing of our beloved Mom, Carol Vassar on May 7th, 2016.
Born in a traditional Italian family in New York, “Lil” was the youngest girl of seven siblings and the “renegade/hellion” of the close knit family. She met our late father in Times Square during a WWII Victory celebration similar to the iconic photo of the Nurse and Sailor popular at the time. Thus began a twenty- seven year odyssey as a military wife which she performed impeccably and lovingly. Until the past year, Mom never missed a veteran-oriented ceremony or holiday, escorted by her Vietnam Veteran son, Rich and family. Dad served in WWII and Korea on Naval destroyers and submarines, both conventional and nuclear and Mom was tasked with many long separations. Her Brother-in-law, Pete was a German POW for nine months in Poland and a family hero.
Mom was the “rock” of the family through twenty-seven years as a Navy wife with it’s inherent difficulties and working her way up the Government ladder to become an Investigator with the SEC in Miami. During these often difficult times, Mom had to overcome obstacles such as gender and lack of college degree to gain her promotion. She went to college courses on her own time to meet Agency requirements and with the intervention of the EEOC was finally promoted and retired. Her promotion as a female set a precedent, which continues today.
As children, Mom brought us up to believe in the importance of having a “sense of humor.” She was the “Joker” of her family and would do anything to make those around her laugh and have a good time! She often said, “Lifes is too short to be miserable.” This belief system served her well!
Mom often said that we were her “pride and joy”- she was our heroine and will always be in the hearts of the many friends and associates who loved her and called her “Mom.” She is survived by her grandsons, Jason Horan and Christopher Roush; son, Richard Vassar; daughter, Holly Simpson and her devoted son-in-law, Charlie Simpson, who served as long-term caregivers to allow her to live out her days in the home which she built in Port Saint Lucie in 1985.
She will be greatly missed!
