Dedicated nurse and Fort Pierce native Carolyn Jo Kindred passes at 88

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Carolyn Jo Kindred on March 2, 2025.

The daughter of Curtis and Mildred Negus Kicliter, Carolyn was born in Ft. Pierce, Florida on October 24, 1936. Carolyn attended school in St. Lucie County, graduating from Dan McCarty High School in 1954.

Upon graduation she attended Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina where she obtained her degree in nursing. She then returned to Ft. Pierce where she began her nursing career at Fort Pierce Memorial Hospital located on North 7th Street.

Carolyn was active in the community participating in the Sandy Shoes festival, membership in the Beta Sigma Phi sorority and in 1955 was selected as Miss Ft. Pierce.

She married Thomas Rue Lane Kindred Sr. on September 5, 1959. Following their Fort Pierce wedding, the couple moved to Moss Point, Mississippi. During her seven years in Mississippi, Carolyn worked at Singing River Hospital and at a private pediatric practice.

Returning to Ft. Pierce in 1966 with her family, she resumed nursing at Fort Pierce Memorial Hospital. Carolyn continued nursing at Lawnwood Medical Center when the new facility opened in 1977. Having been a true advocate for patient care, community well-being and loving every minute of her 40-year nursing career, Carolyn retired in 1998. Her efforts earned her respect and the gratitude of those whose lives she touched.

Beyond her public service, Carolyn was an avid bridge player, devoted spouse, parent and grandparent, cherishing moments with loved ones and instilling values of integrity, kindness, and empathy. Her warmth, wisdom and support will be dearly missed but forever remembered.

Carolyn is survived by her husband of 65 years, Thomas “Tom” Rue Lane Kindred Sr., daughter Carole Lane Kindred, son Thomas Rue Lane Kindred Jr., daughter in law Mary Koblegard Kindred and grandchildren Mary Sloan Kindred Courtney and Thomas Rue Lane Kindred III.

Though she may have left this world, Carolyn’s spirit will continue to shine through the lives she’s impacted, the care she provided, and the love she shared. In honoring her memory, let us strive to carry forward her mission of kindness, service, and healing.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First United Methodist Church located in Historic Downtown Fort Pierce.
