Carolyn Marie Dohrer

Carolyn Marie Ockenfels Dohrer died February 21, 2011 at the age of 75 in Fort Pierce, FL. She was born in Cosgrove, Iowa to John and Lillian Delaney Ockenfels on June 11, 1935. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Iowa City, Iowa in 1953 and from Mercy School of Nursing in 1956.
Carolyn married Merlyn Dohrer on November 10, 1956 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City, IA. Merlyn and Carolyn moved to Florida in 1966 to avoid the harsh Iowa cold winters. She worked for St. Lucie Eye Associates until her retirement in 2000.

Carolyn will be fondly remembered for her devotion to her children, grandchildren, and family and her undying faith for the Lord. She loved dancing, playing cards, and cooking. She sewed many matching outfits for her children on numerous holidays. Carolyn loved to travel especially to foreign countries with her siblings. Carolyn was an active member of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church for many years serving as a Eucharistic minister and a leader of the Spirit of the Living God Prayer Group.

Carolyn is survived by her husband of 55 years, Merlyn, four daughters Cheryl (Jim) Holt, Susan (Bill) Dowdy, Sandra Clifton, and Laura Dohrer. She is also survived by eight grandchildren Jennifer, Courtney, Tim, Christen, Bobby, Amy, Chelsea, and Travis, as well as two brothers, five sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her parents, her brother, Dick Ockenfels, and her beloved son, Lenny Paul.

Family and Friends are invited to attend a visitation at Haisley Funeral Home Friday, February 25, from 5-7pm with a prayer service and rosary at 6. The funeral will be on Saturday, February 26, at 8am at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
