Pearl Harbor Survivor and World War II Veteran

Clifford William Smith of Fort Pierce, FL and formerly of Plainfield, CT died at the age of 86 on August 28, 2009.

He was born on January 20, 1923 in Everett, MA to the late Louise (Sanborn) Smith and Clarence B. Smith Sr.

On December 7, 1941 Clifford survived the attack on Pearl Harbor, HI. Clifford was a distinguished war hero, receiving the Silver Star for Gallantry in action, 2 Bronze Stars, 2 Purple Hearts, 2 Presidential Unit Citations, Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Arrow Head, American Defense Medal with clasp for Pearl Harbor Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and numerous campaign ribbons.

Clifford was a proud member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, Disabled Veterans of America (DAV), the VFW 5446 of Plainfield, CT, and the American Legion Post 91 in Moosup, CT.

Clifford was predeceased by his beloved wife Laura, both his parents, a sister Edith Anderson, his infant brother Arthur Franklin Smith, and two grandchildren Catana Bernard and Charles Smith.

He leaves behind five children, Mark Henry Smith and wife Kathy of Florida, Deborah McQuesten and husband Gary of Danielson, CT, William Smith and wife Patty of Florida, Laurie LeClair and husband Jim of Texas, and Matthew Sanborn Smith. He also leaves nine grandchildren, Gary McQuesten II, Amanda Livernoche, Michael McQuesten Sr. all of CT, Clifford A. Smith of Wisconsin, Shaelyn Toman of Florida, Ronni Smith of Oregon, Terri Barker of Florida, and Ian and Ivory Smith of Florida. He leaves his four great grandchildren, Michael McQuesten, Jr. of CT, Tessa Bea Toman of Florida, and twins Hueburt and Chapman Smith of Wisconsin. He leaves his brother Clarence B. Smith of Central Village, CT, his sister Mildred Ryan of Fort Worth, TX, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.

Donations can be made in Clifford W. Smith's name to any Veteran's organization of your choice.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 from 4-6 PM at Haisley Funeral Home. A military burial and twenty one gun salute will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Plainfield, CT. Local arrangements are under the direction of Haisley Funeral & Cremation Service.
