Coach Chris Shay, 82, died November 28, 2006 in Fort Pierce, Florida.Coach Shay was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and moved to Ft. Pierce in 1954 coming from Raleigh, North Carolina.He was a teacher/coach in the St. Lucie County School System for 31 years; he coached football & baseball for Dan McCarty High School and Central High School for 30 years, ending his career as the Athletic Director of Fort Pierce Central High School. He was a Veteran of U.S. Army serving during WWII as a Para Trooper and played College Football and Baseball for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, playing in 2 Sugar Bowls and 1 Cotton Bowl.Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Evelyn Shay of Lake Wales, FL; sons, Christopher Shay and Donna Higgins of Ft. Pierce, FL, Charles Shay and Carolina Shay of Jensen Beach, FL and Patrick Shay of Ashville, NC; grandchildren, Christopher Shay IV, Caitlyn Shay and Conrad Shay.Memorial contributions may be made to the Treasure Coast Hospices, 1201 SE Indian Street, Stuart, FL 34997.
