David E. Haughton, 78, of Fort Pierce, Florida died May 13, 2015 in Port Saint Lucie, FL.
He was predeceased by his parents, Eugene Delos Haughton and Sarah Freeborn Haughton and his loving wife, Sara Kuhn Haughton.
David was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, where he was Captain of the tennis team and nationally ranked in both Singles and Doubles. After graduation, David served as a Second Lieutenant on the USS Barbaro submarine in the height of the Cold War. He married his high school sweetheart, Sara Norton Kuhn, and remained married for over 40 years until she passed in 2003.
Once David’s service for the Navy was over, his next adventure was at Reed Haughton Motors. He was also instrumental in the start up of MetLife in the Port St. Lucie area, where he started as an insurance agent and later rose to be a branch manager and eventually retired. He was truly exceptional in every position he held.
Outside of his talent on the tennis courts, David had a passion for cooking, fishing, and the holidays, especially Christmas. He had an abundance of holiday decorations that included an impressive train village that was admired by many. He had even been referred to as “Father Christmas”.
Out of all of his passions the one he valued the most was his family. He was a true family man that could be found even in the last days planning and orchestrating the next family vacation.
David is survived by his sister: Sandra Sole, three children: David F. Haughton, Michael B. Haughton (Lori) and Sara K. Dreffer (Brad, Sr.), five grandchildren: Alyssa Gibson (Jason), Ashley Haughton, Brooke Dreffer, Brad Dreffer, Jr. and Britt Dreffer, and his great-granddaughter: Kalista Gibson.
