In Loving Memory of Captain David Roystone Kohlus Port St Lucie, Florida

David Kohlus, a legendary fisherman and beloved captain of the ADAH-K, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on November 10th at the age of 72. Born in Rockville Centre, Long Island NY, David lived a life devoted to his family, his boat and the sea.

A fixture in the local fishing industry of Montauk NY, Captain Dave was widely respected not only for his skill and knowledge of the ocean but also for his wild stories and adventures. Some of his most notable fish were an 820-pound giant tuna and two blue marlin, both over 900 pounds. The stories he could tell were infinite. To all who worked alongside him, he was more than a captain—he was a friend, a guide, and a symbol of dedication and hard work.

David began his career at the young age of 21 and quickly became known for his deep understanding of the tides, weather patterns, and the ways of the sea. He had a passion for sharing the experience of catching “big ones” with all who joined him on deck of the ADAHK and his first boat, the Hooker.

David was the son of Norman (Captain Boots) Kohlus and Elisabeth Schwemmer Kohlus. His mother’s early death when he was just eight years old shaped his life in many ways. Dave did what was necessary to survive, from bussing tables and painting boats to working as a captain’s mate and helper. He developed a multitude of skills, learned to survive and provide for his family. David also exhibited tremendous generosity and developed a deep understanding of gratitude. Last winter he spent months building a 12-foot boat from scratch as a gift to his grandson, Maverick, and personally towed it to Virginia.

He is survived by his children Hailey Nielsen and Ashley Blackburn, grandchildren Maverick Nielsen and Hunter Fromm, and his sisters Betsey Kohlus, Susan Kah and Sandra Faul. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Ada Kohlus, and his brother Barry Kohlus. His family takes comfort in knowing that his legacy will live on in the waters he loved and the many lives he touched.

A Celebration of his Life is planned for Friday, November 15 from 4:30 to 6:30pm, at Haisley Reception Center, 1614 S 31st Street in Fort Pierce, Florida.
