David “Coach” W. Rice, 91 years old, of Ft. Pierce, FL passed away peacefully at home on November 9, 2018. He was surrounded by family and friends.
He was a member of the Indian River Presbyterian Church in Ft. Pierce, FL.
“Coach” was blessed to only have 2 teaching jobs: Coaching PE and was Athletic Director for 25 yrs at Graland Country Day School in Denver, Colorado, 1950-1976. In 1976-1991 he moved his family to St. Martins Episcopal School in Metairie, LA near New Orleans, LA for 15 yrs where he taught PE and coached high school. His teams won the State Championship in Cross Country Track. The Saints came marching in!
He is survived by his four children, Donald Lance Rice of Phoenix, AZ, Jane K. Rice of Ft. Pierce, FL, Lawrence D. Rice of Loveland, CO and Steven J. Rice of Phoenix, AZ; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Donna Belle Jeffords Rice, in 2001, brother, Matty Rice and his sister, Jane Rice Yemington.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Graland or St. Martins Schools.
Services: A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at 3:15 PM at Breakers Community Clubhouse, 4949 North Hwy A1A, Ft. Pierce, FL 34949 (North Hutchinson Island).
