Dennis J. Horvath

Dennis J. Horvath, 57, passed away on July 12, 2014 in Ft. Pierce, Florida.

His lifelong passion of being a restaurateur started in the college town of Athens Ohio, when he was 15, where his family owned a Perkins Pancake & Steak House. After graduating from High School he earned an Associate’s Degree in Restaurant & Hotel Management from Hocking Technical College also in Ohio. During this time his family sought respite from the cold Ohio temperatures at their vacation home on Hutchinson Island. When Dennis was 27 his family sold their restaurant and relocated to Ft. Pierce.

In 1984 he and his sister Deena opened the original Captain’s Galley across from the Ft. Pierce City Marina. Three years later Dennis built his new Captain’s Galley where it is currently located today at the foot of the South Bridge. For the past 30 years his hard work and dedication has allowed the Galley to stand as the longest running restaurant in St. Lucie County under the same ownership. It has also garnered Indian River Magazine’s “Best Breakfast” in St. Lucie County for several years. The restaurant is still a family affair including his children, aunt and cousins.

Dennis was a man who believed in Christ’s teachings. He exemplified this by helping others who were less fortunate and taking the time to give back to the community. He supplied food, donated the time cooking and serving at the local food banks, as well as St. Anastasia’s Pancake Breakfast for several years.

Dennis was happy when he was fishing, partaking in water sports or singing karaoke. He was especially happy spending time with his three children. He really enjoyed life, had a great sense of humor and was fun to be around. People were attracted to him because of his positive vibe, his beautiful blue eyes and beaming infectious smile.
Those who adored Dennis can carry on by remembering, that he was their gift and that gift is not gone… He will always be with them because of all that he has given them.

Survivors include his 3 children, Tyler, Taryn, and Trevor Horvath all of Ft. Pierce, FL; sisters, Denise Horvath of Stuart, FL and Deena Horvath Wade of Ft. Pierce, FL; and step-brother, Robert Rakowich of Ohio and fiance, Linda Baldree. He is preceded in death by his father, Joseph A. Horvath and mother, Peggy Rogers Rakowich.
