In Loving Memory of Dona “Wedia” Steppe
Dona Harwedia Steppe, an unforgettable woman with a heart as big as her personality, left us on November 4th at the age of 66. Her life was as colorful and full of adventure as she was. Known for her razor-sharp wit, unmatched sense of humor, and a presence that filled any room, she lived life on her own terms, unafraid to speak her mind and fiercely protective of those she loved.
She spent much of her career in water treatment, first with the town of Farmville, then the City of Lynchburg both in Virginia, and later with the City of Fort Pierce, Florida. In every role, she brought a relentless work ethic and pride in her service, always showing up for her community and making a difference through her dedication.
Her life was rich with stories—some might say legendary. Wedia was willing and able to do just about anything. She had the ability to adapt to any situation and overcame many of life's greatest challenges. She approached each chapter with a fearless spirit and unshakable resilience. She even took on the role of private eye at one point, never backing down from a challenge and always ready to take on whatever came her way.
As a mother and father figure to many children, she provided a kind of tough love that was both nurturing and direct. She’d tell you exactly what she thought, and you always knew right where you stood with her. Her honesty and strength of character left a lasting impact on everyone lucky enough to know her.
Her love for “both kinds of music country… and western” was a constant soundtrack to her life, along with the lively sound of her own singing—often accompanied by her beloved “poopie dogs.” A self-professed Farkle champion of the world, she filled every home she graced with laughter, heavy amounts of salty language, and always a chilled bottle of Crown Royal, ready to share with family and friends.
She leaves behind a legacy of strength, love, and laughter that will live on in the stories, memories, and hearts of all who knew her. She showed us how to live fully, speak truthfully, and love wholeheartedly. She was never afraid to be exactly who she was, embracing her true self with courage and authenticity, even during a time when acceptance was hard to come by—a testament to her strength and resilience. She will be missed by all who knew her and her memory will forever be cherished as part of life’s tapestry woven in our hearts forever.
Arrangements will be forthcoming over the next few days.
