Dorothy Rowe Downey (Dolly) passed away August 20, 2024 in Tallahassee, Florida.
She was born September 18, 1930 in Fort Pierce, Florida to Dr. Samuel K. and Helen Platts Rowe.
She earned a degree from Florida State University School of Music with concentrations in piano and voice. She was encouraged by her music professors to become a concert pianist but chose to go into music education instead. In 1953, Dolly married Thomas Deaver McMullen (deceased) and had 2 children, Thomas Rowe McMullen (deceased) (Julia DeHoff) and Nathan Blane McMullen (Karen). In 1967, Dolly married Earl Chamness Downey (deceased) and became mother to 5 daughters: Beverly, Sharon (deceased), Jeannine, Gwen and Beth. In 1979, Dolly and Earl bought property in Newland, NC and built a house designed by their son, Nathan. Dolly lived there until 2016, when she moved to Tallahassee. Dolly was devoted to her family, music and teaching. More importantly, she had a profound love of God and for the Presbyterian Church. She taught music to elementary school students in Florida for decades and served as choir director and organist for her church wherever she lived. Dolly had a smile for everyone she met. She lived her entire life as a devoted Christian. This accounted for her sincere happiness and sweet nature. Dolly loved to bake; her blueberry salad was legendary. She loved birds and dogs and kept her garden and house full of flowers.
Dolly is also survived by numerous beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces nephews and extended family.
The family wishes to thank the Nurses, Doctors and Staff at Westminster Oaks. Their care and dedication to Dolly was exceptional and very much appreciated. We also wish to thank Shelly Wilson and her family of Newland, NC for their years of friendship and love.
