Douglas MacArthur Parrett

02/22/1942 – 07/04/2014

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother; Douglas, or “Uggie” as he was known by those closest to him, was a true hero. Survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Ursula Ann Parrett. They met on July 4, 1963, while Doug was deployed in Germany. Neither spoke the others language, but love transcended all. On January 17, 1964 they married, and in November of that same year they welcomed their eldest son Daniel Theodore. In August of 1966, while deployed in Vietnam, they welcomed their daughter Shirley Marie, and in 1971 they welcomed their youngest son Bryan Lee.

After 25 years of faithful service in the U.S. Army, moving every three years, with seven of those being transcontinental relocations, Doug and his family settled in Florida and retired at the rank of Sergeant Major. His children would give him five beautiful, healthy grandchildren, Ashley Nicole Lindstadt, Aaron Christopher Lindstadt, Austin Theodore Parrett, John Ryan Parrett, and Paige Jordan Parrett.

During his distinguished military tenure he was honored with a plethora of awards and recognitions, however the following enumerated quite eloquently the many facets of this great man:
“Citation by the direction of the President; The Bronze Star Medal is presented to Staff Sergeant Douglas M. Parrett, United States Army who distinguished himself by outstandingly meritorious service in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam during the period 10/1969 to 10/1970. He consistently manifested exemplary professionalism and initiative in obtaining outstanding results. His rapid assessment and solution of numerous problems inherent in a combat environment greatly enhanced the allied effectiveness against a determined and aggressive enemy. Despite many adversities, he invariably performed his duties in a resolute and efficient manner. Energetically applying his sound judgment and extensive knowledge, he has contributed materially to the successful accomplishment of the United States mission in the Republic of Vietnam. His loyalty, diligence and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Daddy is part of a dying breed that truly asked, “What can I do for my country….not….what can my country do for me.” The recognition within this award is how he lived his life as well. Rising to all matters of adversity with grace and poise. A brave, genuine soul who will be missed beyond human measure. Join us in honoring this hero Saturday, July 12, 2014 from 4-7 PM with Military Honors at 6:00 PM at Haisley Funeral Home located at 3015 Okeechobee Road, Fort Pierce, FL.
