Doyne Easterwood - Former Ferndale Fire Chief passed on Saturday July 13, 2013 at the age of 83.
Services: A memorial service will be held Friday, August 2nd, 2013 at 7:00PM at Spaulding & Curtin Funeral Home, 500 W. 9 Mile Rd. Ferndale, MI 48220. Family will be receiving friends beginning at 4:00PM
He was born to Roy and Edith Easterwood on June 21st, 1930 in Ferndale, MI and was the youngest of five children, a brother to Roy, Basil, Jean and Marietta. Doyne married Ruth MacKay in September of 1951 and they had two daughters, Deborah and Sandra. He later married Joan Mitroff in 1987 where she remained his wife until his passing.
Doyne was a graduate of Lincoln High School and began his 36 year career with the Ferndale Fire Department in 1952 at the age of 21. Working his way through the ranks of sergeant, lieutenant, captain and assistant chief, Doyne was inevitably promoted to the position of Chief in 1983. Chief Easterwood was a man with a sense of humor but when it came to the science of fire and putting them out, he was all business.
Upon retirement, Doyne focused his attention on his other passion, boating. Owner and captain of the forty foot Pacemaker, Black Jack, the work that was required to maintain such a craft, was a labor of love for him. Many wonderful friends were made during those years on the boat, as well as the fire department and they have remained so until this day. Anyone can tell you that Doyne was a clever, humorous, mischievous and generous man, respected and loved by many.
Doyne is survived by his wife Joanie, his daughter Sande, granddaughters Heather and Carly and his 3 great grandchildren Sommer, Kailey and Tyler.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that all donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
