Edward Lane “Ted” Burrows died August 25th, 2024 at his home in White City. He was 82.
He was born July 7, 1942, in Teaneck, N.J. to Edward Christie Burrows and Dorothy Agnes Lane Burrows. The family moved to Fort Pierce in 1955.
He was a 1960 graduate of Dan McCarty High School and a 1963 graduate of Indian River Junior College.
He served for four years in the U.S. Army (1966-70) as a member of the White House Communications Agency, the military unit that provides worldwide communication support to the president of the United States. In this post he traveled extensively with Presidents Johnson and Nixon throughout the United States and overseas. He was awarded the Presidential Service Badge and the Joint Service Commendation Medal.
Following his Army service, he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Florida. While in Gainesville he married Linda Mae Stark on Aug. 28, 1971. Their twin daughters Amy Kathleen and Elizabeth Anne were born Feb. 26, 1975.
He had a varied half-century career in journalism, including 23 years as editorial page editor for The Stuart News and Port St. Lucie News, earning numerous awards. After retirement from the newspapers in 2002 he was employed for almost two decades as an announcer and newscaster for WQCS-FM radio at Indian River State College.
He was a longtime member of the Florida Historical Society and the St. Lucie Historical Society and served on both organizations’ board of directors. He also sang in productions of the Treasure Coast Opera and the St. Lucie Chorale.
Survivors include his wife, Linda S. Burrows and his two daughters, Amy K. Beath (with husband Michael S. Beath) and Elizabeth A. Cunningham, plus two granddaughters, Haley E. Cunningham and Addisen B. Cunningham. He also is survived by one brother, David W. Burrows.
A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday October 2nd at 6 pm at Sailfish Brewing Company 130 N 2nd Street Fort Pierce. Food will be provided and we are hoping it will be a relaxed and casual event.
