Edward Lee Holcomb, 84, passed on Friday, March 28, 2008, at his home after a prolonged battle with Alzheimer’s.Ed was born in 1923 in Toccoa, Georgia where he lived most of his life. After visiting Fort Pierce seasonally for a number of years, he relocated here permanently in 1999 with his wife Mary Becht Holcomb.
Ed joined the US Navy during WWII and served in the Pacific theater. He was with the forces that landed on Tarawa, the first island to be taken back from the Japanese and a turning point in the Allies fight. At the conclusion of the war and his release from the Navy Ed enrolled in Georgia Tech. He enjoyed his time as an alumnus of this university and thoroughly enjoyed fall football. After his time at Tech Ed returned to Toccoa, Georgia and began his business career. He retired from Tabor Motor Company in 1989 as its owner and operator, having worked his way up to that position with his usual hard work and dedication that were so much a part of his characterEd is survived by his wife of 30 years, Mary Becht Holcomb; his sister Claudia Hammock of Alpharetta, Georgia; son Edward L. and Teresa Holcomb of Alpharetta, Georgia; daughter Susan and Glenn Hunsucker of Conover, North Carolina; step-daughter Barbara Becht Kirkpatrick of Atlanta, Georgia; step-sons Charles and Beverly Becht of Tucker, Georgia; Edward and Colleen Becht of Fort Pierce, Florida; and step-daughter Carol and Ken Twiddy of Duluth, Georgia. Ed also had 2 grandchildren and 7 step-grandchildren.Ed was predeceased by his first wife, Laura Graves Holcomb and his brother Kenneth Holcomb.Services will be held at Haisley Funeral Home on Okeechobee Road in Fort Pierce. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, March 31, 2008. A service will be held on Tuesday April 1, 2008 at 11:00 am at the Haisley Chapel. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Fort Pierce for family only.In lieu of flowers please send contributions to Treasure Coast Hospices, 1201 SE Indian Street, Stuart, FL 34997.
