Edward E Sumner

July 1, 1947 — December 27, 2024

Vero Beach, FL

Edward E. Sumner, affectionately known as Gene, passed away on December 27, 2024, in Palm Bay, Florida at the age of 77. Born on July 1, 1947, in Macon, Georgia, Gene embraced life with a passion that was as vibrant as the stories he loved to share.

He was not only a devoted family man but also a man of deep faith. He lived for the Lord and found joy in singing praise, sharing his love for God with everyone fortunate enough to know him. His personality shone brightly, and his laughter was often accompanied by captivating tales of his fishing and hunting adventures, which could sometimes stretch the limits of believability. These stories became cherished memories for his loved ones, a testament to his adventurous spirit and joyful outlook on life.

Gene’s service to his country began when he joined the Army on August 6, 1964, where he served proudly during the Vietnam War, as a Transport Driver, exemplifying dedication and commitment to both his military and family duties. Some time after his Honorable Discharge on February 29, 1972, he moved to Florida and went to work in the citrus industry.

Gene was a loving husband to his wife Joyce, with whom he shared 44 wonderful years. His legacy lives on through their daughters: Nancy Waddell of Vero Beach, Florida; Debbie Dugan (Shelby) of Palm Bay, Florida; Tracy Brooks of Orlando, Florida; Kim Wester (Mark) of Waynesville, North Carolina; Terri Adams (Ronnie) of Vero Beach, Florida; and Tonya Amato (Stephen) of Port St. Lucie, Florida. Gene took immense pride in his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were often the light of his life and the reason for his countless smiles.

He is survived by his beloved family and will be profoundly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Irvin Sumner, his brother Ronnie Sumner, and his sister Wilma Sumner Smith, who are surely welcoming him with open arms in the heavenly realms.

As we remember Gene, we hold close the warmth of his spirit and the unconditional love he shared. His laughter, stories, and faith will resonate in the hearts of all who knew him, keeping his memory alive as a guiding light in our lives.
