On November 9, 2013 Ellie McGilpin completed her full circle of life, having died with devoted daughter, Robin, at her side. Born November 9, 1925 Eleanor Frances Mateer was the eldest of 5 children to parents Charles and Alice Mateer in Whitinsville, MA. Always independent and determined, Ellie joined the Army Air Corps where her brief nursing career led to her life's occupation of wife and mother. She married Col. William McGilpin, Jr. (Bill) on February 10, 1951 and quickly began to raise their three children. Ellie was a gifted artist whose paintings now proudly hang in homes of family and friends. Her intellect knew few rivals and her curiosity was keen, making her many travels deeply rewarding. Ellie and Bill traveled the world over the years, some of her favorite trips included China, Australia, the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Americas. She also visited all 50 states in the US - she and Bill traveling once in their camper from Florida to Alaska where she capped off the trek with a daring bush-pilot flight to the North Pole.
Ellie is survived by her three children, Robert McGilpin (Rochelle), and daughters Robin Harman (Dave) and Sue McGilpin (Jayne); her only grandchild, Chantal Harman Puyleart (Dave) and great-grandson Ryan and her younger brothers Kenny and Robert. Ellie was preceded in death by her husband Bill, sister Joan and brother Joe.
The family wants to gratefully acknowledge the care given Ellie with loving kindness over the last few years by her caregivers Marie and Micheline.
No local services will be held. Burial will be at a later time, alongside her husband, in Arlington National Cemetery. The family asks that all gifts honoring Ellie's life be given to Treasure Coast Hospice.
