Frederick John Davis (Dave)
February 1, 1920 - April 12, 2015
Dave was born in London, England. He married Mary Ann Brand in 1943. He served in the British army engineers in Europe for seven years during WWII, including action on the second day at Normandy. When he returned home at wars end, he found he had a ready made family. Mary's parents and one sister had been killed in the bombing of London leaving eight children. Mary and Dave adopted the youngest child, Leonard Brand, and raised him as their own son. In addition, they took in several of the other siblings at various times and helped them all settle with new families.
Two sons were born to Mary and Dave: David Frederick and Stephen John. In addition to the three children, Dave is survived by three daughters-in-law, Betty, Ginger and Tessa; four grandchildren Rob, Teiro, Scott and Adam; and eleven great-grandchildren.
Dave brought his family to America in 1952 and settled in northern Virginia. He was an expert carpenter and wood craftsman, and, during his career, he did considerable restoration work for the Smithsonian Institution. He and Mary joined a camping group called the Virginia Creepers and enjoyed extensive camping and travelling throughout America.
Unfortunately, he lost Mary just as he reached retirement age. To help him through this difficult time, Len and Betty put him to work building a second home for them near the Chesapeake Bay. Dave managed the project and did most of the finish work himself. He lived in this house for several years before getting the travel bug again. He was off to see more of America before finally settling permanently in Ft Pierce, FL in 1995.
Dave took up golf in his 50s and developed a passion for the game that lasted the rest of his life. He became a member of Island Pines Golf Club where he eventually directed both the men's and couples' leagues. He had several holes-in-one to his credit at various golf courses in the area.
Dave was a man of integrity who was respected by all. Although he may have been born an Englishman, he loved his adopted country. He was the quintessential American.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Dave's name may be made to The First Tee organization (

). The First Tee is an international youth development organization introducing the game of golf and its inherent values to young people.
Inurnment will take place in Virginia at a later date.
