George A. Meyer III, 18, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., who died Oct. 18 in an automobile accident, was a beloved son, a cherished brother, a trustworthy friend and a high-honor student.
But he was so much more.
Mr. Meyer – known affectionately by those who knew and loved him as Georgie – crammed a broad range of activities and accomplishments into his short time on Earth.
According to his father, Georgie displayed traits that belied his youth. He was smart – finishing with high honors upon graduating from Fort Pierce Central High School this past May. He received the student government’s certificate of achievement at graduation.
“He was a brilliant student,” his father said. “He was honest to a fault. And he wasn’t boastful, even though he achieved so many great things. He was my best friend. Gloria and I will miss him dearly.”
Mr. Meyer had lofty and attainable goals and dreams. He took two years of dual enrollment courses in high school. After graduation, he then continued his college education to become a cardiologist. In the meantime, he became quite skilled at making shrewd financial investments.
He was particularly fond of his dog Cooper, an American bulldog, and his cat Nala.
Mr. Meyer was blessed with movie-star good looks. He was notorious for his weight training workouts at a local gym.
He was an accomplished spear fisher, a certified scuba diver, a fearless surfer and a skilled guitar player. He rose to the level of striped black belt, having trained at a local martial arts dojo for eight years.
Mr. Meyer was a member of his school’s ROTC program during his freshman and sophomore years, enjoying the organization’s intense workouts.
While in school, he was a member of the Fort Pierce Central’s student government.
Mr. Meyer played for the Treasure Coast Baptist Sharks, a flag football team, where he was the team’s quarterback. On the Sharks was his long-time best friend, Junior Bayona, who was his leading receiver.
“Georgie was always very competitive,” his friend said. “When we’d go to the gym to work out, we’d always compete to see who was the strongest. And Georgie would always win.”
“And he was very protective of his friends.”
Georgie, in fact, literally saved Junior’s life during a snorkeling trip when a strong rip current pulled Junior toward the boat’s propeller. “I started slipping toward the blades of the engine when Georgie grabbed me and pulled me to safety.”
Mr. Meyer is survived by his father, George A. Meyer Sr. of Port St. Lucie; his mother, Tetyana Meyer of Palm Beach Gardens; his sisters, Gloria of Port St. Lucie, and Hannah of Palm Beach Gardens, as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Mr. Meyer was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, George and Gloria Meyer; his maternal grandparents, Hanna and Evan Kovalchuk; his uncles Robert Meyer and Gary Meyer; his aunts Dorena Meyer and Melissa Meyer; and his cousin, Jeff Lefebvre.
Funeral arrangements, which include cremation, are being handled by Haisley Funeral Home.
