Grace Y. Benway

December 10, 1937 — July 31, 2022

Grace Y. Benway
Fort Pierce, Florida

Grace Y. Benway, 84, went to her Eternal Home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus on July 31st, 2022. Whereas we are saddened by her passing from this life with us, please join with us also as we celebrate with joy her ultimate homecoming!

Grace Yvonne Johnson was born to Odwin B. Johnson and Betsey (Kjendlie) Johnson in Edgerton, Wisconsin on December 10th, 1937. She is a graduate of Edgerton High School (1955). Grace was married to Roland J. Benway on October 15th, 1955, Roland passed on June 17th, 1999. Together they raised 4 children: Kristi Benway Turner (1956-2020); Kathy Benway Burgess of Sebastian, FL; Charles R. Benway (Diane) of Granite Falls, NC; and Kelley Benway Renz (Les Miller) of Ft. Pierce, FL. She also enjoyed 4 grandchildren: Melissa Bliss (Josh Bliss) of Tahlequah, OK; Lyle Renz of Vero Beach, FL; Erik Benway of Columbus, GA; and Jeni Turner of Albany GA. Finally, she was “Great Grandma Grace” (“3-G” affectionately!) to her only great grandson, Kylo Renz of Vero Beach, FL!
Grace also had four brothers. Rollin Johson and Marvin Johnson pre-deceased her. She is survived by Clifford Johnson (Betty) and Stanley Johnson (Jill), sister-in-law Corrine Johnson, and many nephews and one niece, all of Wisconsin.

Grace lived a full life! From humble beginnings on the farm in Edgerton, WI, she ultimately moved to Ft. Pierce, FL with her family in early 1972. From there, she pursued a career in banking rising from a teller to VP of Teller Services with First Federal S&L / Harbor Federal, retiring (for the 1st time) in 1987. When the New York Mets came to Port St. Lucie, FL in 1988, she was their first hire, becoming Ticket Director for Annual Spring Training and the Minor League St. Lucie Mets until retiring (for the 2nd time) in 2004. Not wanting to sit idle, she then signed up with Walmart as a cashier, moving to their cash office and retiring (for the 3rd and final time) in 2014.

Throughout her life, Grace enjoyed serving the Church. She, along with our dad, were founding members of Hope Lutheran Church in Port St. Lucie, FL. She sang in the choir and was a perennial Sunday School teacher and Youth leader. She also made sure there were always home baked goodies for the coffee hour. Many friends from Luther League at St. Andrew’s in Port St. Lucie, FL remember her love and quick wit! We, the family, do as well!

Our mom lived life to the fullest, working hard and loving harder! Today, we are at peace because we know that you finally are too! Until we meet again in paradise! We love you mom! 2 Timothy 4:6-8.
