Harley Glidden Cowles, 72, passed away at home on May 23, 2016, after a valiant fight against pulmonary fibrosis.
He was born and raised in Ft. Pierce, FL. He graduated from Dan McCarty High School and received a B.S. Degree from the University of South Florida. He served in the US Air Force in Vietnam.
He retired from the St. Lucie Co. Sheriff's Department after serving in various administrative posts.
Harley was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He was extremely knowledgeable about Old Florida history and was a world traveler. He contributed to his community in many areas, especially as a founding member of the Ft. Pierce Farmer's Market, serving many years as its president.
He is survived by Vicki Cowles, his devoted wife of 28 years; his children Frank Cowles of Ft. Pierce, Whitney Cowles Russell of Knoxville, TN, Lori Nechay and Lisa Sharot of Port St. Lucie, FL; his siblings Hart Stephenson of Ft. Pierce, Dan Cowles of Cumming, GA, Doris Poodry of Buffalo NY, and Mollie DeHart of Miami, FL; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents Frank W. (Pete) Cowles and Wilma Cooper Cowles.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SLC Humane Society.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 29, 2016 from 2-3 PM with a Celebration of Life at 3:00 PM Haisley Funeral Home, Fort Pierce. Service will be followed by a reception for family and friends.
