Harold F. Smelter died peacefully at Hospice House on January 20, 2021 at the age of 87.
Harold was a devoted husband to Olga (Hines), his wife of 58 years, loving father to Laurie (Haruben) and Stacey (Flanagan), father-in-law to Jerry and Patrick, and proud grandfather to Alexandra, Declan, James and Xavier. He was an adventurer, a prankster, a sportsman and a natural athlete.
Harold was born on June 26, 1933 in Peekskill, New York to Bernard and Anna Smelter. The youngest of four children, he grew up in Garrison, NY and graduated from Haldane High School. He served in the Navy from 1952 - 1956. He and Olga were married in June, 1962.
Harold was a teacher in the Hendrick Hudson School district for 30 years. During his free time, he was an avid outdoorsman and adventurer. He enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his life. In 1975 he became a certified SCUBA diver, at a time when this sport was in its infancy to the general public. This remained a passion throughout his life; he encouraged his daughters, nephews, friends and grandchildren to experience and explore the ocean. Summers were spent in Rhode Island where he could fish and dive on a daily basis. He enjoyed traveling the country and the world.
Harold retired in 1994 and he and Olga moved to Port St. Lucie, FL in 1995. In retirement, he enjoyed golf, travel and spending time with family and friends. He had a zest for life and was always playing jokes on colleagues, friends and family members. He will be missed by many.
The family will plan to have a memorial service this summer, 2021, details to be determined.
