Helen Arias Heavner

May 16, 1914 — April 15, 2020

Helen Arias Heavner passed away peacefully at age 105, on April 15, 2020 in Orlando, FL.

Helen Heavner was born in West, Virginia on May 16, 1914. Helen was the 10th and last child of Victorino Arias and Dionisia Lopez Arias. Her family migrated to the United States from Aviles, Spain. The Arias family lived in West Virginia and later in Canton, Ohio.

Helen loved telling stories about her brothers and sisters. She especially loved to reminisce about when her mother would take them out to the pasture and they would sit on the green grass where she taught them how to pray. She was a devoted Catholic and prayed for everyone. She prayed from the moment she woke up until she went to bed. I’m sure she was praying her sleep too. Her constant prayer and faith made one find comfort and healing during difficult times.

Helen met her late husband George Heavner while working at the Canton Stamping Company. She told the story of how their eyes would meet while a work; he would then follow with a wink. They started dating and were married in April 1938. They had their only child, Howard Thomas Heavner in January 1941, she would say he was the apple of her eye. In 1951 they left Canton, OH for sunny Fort Pierce, FL. Helen and George were married for 48 years until George passed away in May 1985. Her son, Howard passed away April 2007.

Helen devoted much her life to St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church. There she was a special minister of the Eucharist and would often visit hospitals to give Eucharist to the sick. She also spent years volunteering for the Red Cross. She moved to Orlando, FL in 2003 to be closer to her family. Helen, or Nana to her family, loved to work on puzzles and word searches and would never decline sweets. She had witty sayings or a song which would make you smile. She would always giggle when her grandchildren and great grandchildren called her Nana Banana.

Helen would always say, “What a blessed reunion it will be when I am reunited with my family, especially George and Howard”. We hope she is surrounded by all those she has missed for so long and is having the best reunion ever. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten.

Helen is survived by her granddaughter Lisa, grandson Thomas, granddaughter-in-law Dayana and great grandchildren Kassandra, Kaitlyn, Trevor and Madeline.

Due to COVID-19 there will be no Wake Service. Helen will be buried alongside her husband & son at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Ft. Pierce, FL
