Jeffrey Furst, 68, died July 5, 2010 at the St. Lucie Medical Center.

He was born in Buffalo, New York and lived in St. Lucie County for 40 years, coming from Charleston, West Virginia.

He was a graduate of West Virginia University with a degree in speech pathology and audiology. He was a pilot in the United States Air Force, a member of the Masonic Order and the Scottish Rite.

He was a speech therapist for the St. Lucie County Migrant Program and a 12 year member of the St. Lucie County School Board. As a St. Lucie County School Board member, he was instrumental in establishing the first magnet schools in St. Lucie County.

His interest in real estate led him to become a certified real estate appraiser and agent in Saint Lucie County as well as a member of the St. Lucie County Citizens’ Budget Committee for many years. His desire to serve the community resulted in his seeking the office as Property Appraiser, a position he has held since 2001. He was a member of the Florida Association of Property Appraisers and the Property Appraisers Association of Florida.

He was an organizer and chairman of the board of the Port St. Lucie National Bank and remained a board member of the Seacoast National Bank.

He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He leaves behind his wife, Delaine Furst, Associate Professor at Indian River State College. He is survived by two daughters, Stephanie Furst Harmody and Dr. Christina Furst Namvar. Stephanie is a former teacher in the St. Lucie County School System, wife of Scott Harmody and mother of Jeffrey, Katie and John. Christina is a physician in private practice in Sebastian, wife of James Namvar and mother of Jeremiah and Joshua. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Gifford and her husband, Jon of Bullhead City, AZ.

His personal interests included cars, boats, and fishing. He will be greatly missed in the Property Appraisers’ office, by his many friends, and especially his wife, children and grandchildren who were the loves of his life.

Services: Visitation will be held on Friday, July 9, 2010 from 4-7 PM at Westside Baptist Church. A service will be conducted on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at 10:00 AM at Westside Baptist Church.
