Jerry Merlin Heater, 84, of Branchville NJ, peacefully passed away on Friday September 9th at Indian River Hospital in Vero Beach FL with his family at his side.
Jerry was born at home in Frankford Township NJ on December 19, 1937 to Alice and Merlin Heater. Jerry joined the Navy and served proudly for eight years. Four years of active duty aboard the MSO430 Mine Sweeper and the USS Pandemus ARL-18 holding the rank of Damage Controlman. During his military career he traveled around the Mediterranean and developed his love of travel by sea.
After his honorable discharge, Jerry went on to work for his uncle Eston Heater in his trucking business. Later he would hold the position of Superintendent for the Sussex County Department of Weights and Measures serving more than thirty years. He and his family also owned and operated the Five Star Diner in Branchville for more than twenty years. During the winter months, Jerry and his wife, Linda could be found traveling south to their second home in Port St Lucie FL.
Throughout his life he enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing, cutting wood, growing vegetables and trying to repair just about anything. He loved gardening and was always complimented on his beautiful flowers. Summer picnics with family and friends brought him great joy. His love of ocean cruising would lead to over fifty voyages throughout the world. He always felt, “Cruising is the only way to go”. He was a lifetime member of the NRA and Golden Eagles.
Jerry was predeceased by his parents Merlin and Alice Heater of Branchville NJ, his brother, William of Monroe NH, his sister, Shirley Lambert of Branchville NJ, and his sister, Sharon O’Brien of Branchville NJ.
Jerry is survived by his wife Linda (Quick) of 63 years, their sons David of Port St Lucie FL and Terry and his wife Toni of Newton NJ. Grandchildren Tom Heater of Blairstown NJ, Rachel and her husband Ub Cabrera of The Woodlands TX, Julianne Heater of Philadelphia PA, and Tyler Heater of Marlton NJ. Great grandchildren Chloe and Gianna Cabrera of The Woodlands TX. His brothers, Ronald of Branchville NJ, Richard of Bridgewater NY, Fred and his wife Mary of Branchville NJ, Ralph of Port St Lucie FL, Carl of Branchville NJ, and his brother in law Daniel O’Brien of Branchville NJ. His brother in law Denton Quick and his wife Barbara of Reading PA and sister in law Gail Hoffman and her husband Ronald of Newton NJ.
Along with all the Heater and Quick family, in laws, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends that became family along the way.
Jerry was a strong, kind, loving, and supportive father, very proud of his family. His knowledge and guidance was the foundation of his family, he will always be in our hearts and we will never forget him.
No services will be held at this time. A gathering of family and friends will be planned for a future date in NJ.
