Jo Ann Sloan
Jo Ann Sloan, affectionately known as “Mama Jo” and “Na’an,” passed peacefully in the early morning hours of April 2, 2025, at Vitas in Rockledge, FL. A lifelong resident of Fort Pierce, Florida, Jo Ann was 78 years old.
Born on October 23, 1946, Jo Ann grew up in Fort Pierce, attended Dan McCarty High School, and never strayed far from the community she loved. She dedicated her professional life to Winn-Dixie, where she worked for decades and retired as a respected lead cashier and front office manager. But her work didn’t stop at the checkout counter—Jo Ann was always lending a hand, giving her time, her heart, and her energy to those around her.
Jo Ann is survived by her daughters: Susan "Dee Dee" Amedure of Barefoot Bay, FL (Jeff), Karen Milton of Morristown, TN (Joseph), and Lisa Sloan of Maryland (Christian); her eight grandchildren: Christopher Summerall, Wesley Summerall, Jeffrey Amedure, David Amedure, Amber Milton, Riley Sloan, Chloe Urrea, Chase Sloan, and Cierra Sloan; and her three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings: Lydia Albritton, John White, Rose Waldron, Glenda White, and Jeff White. She joins in eternal rest her beloved husband Wilford "Frank" Sloan, her children Carrie Summerall and Franklin “Scott” Sloan, her parents John and Leona White, and her grandson Anthony Amedure—all of Fort Pierce.
Jo Ann was known for her warmth, her unwavering generosity, and her knack for making everyone feel like family. She loved bowling, cooking, baking, and hosting gatherings that brought people together. She welcomed everyone. Her home was a place of comfort, filled with laughter, good food, and open arms. Whether it was a neighbor in need or a family member going through hard times, Jo Ann was always the first to step in—no questions asked.
She stayed closely connected with her Dan McCarty High School classmates, regularly meeting up and keeping the bonds of friendship strong through the decades.
To us, she was the heart of the family, the definition of caring and compassion. Her presence filled a room, and her absence leaves a deep, quiet space we will never stop missing.
“She would do anything, for anyone, for any reason, in the sense of helping her fellow community members.” That’s who she was. That’s how we’ll remember her.
