Jocelyn Bezner VMD
Hutchinson Island, Florida

Jocelyn Bezner VMD, native of Philadelphia, and longtime resident of Hutchinson Island, passed away peacefully on September 17th at Lawnwood Hospital in Ft. Pierce, FL with family and friends in attendance following a very brief and devastating illness. Born August 11, 1956 to John Bezner (deceased) and Dorothy (Senft) Bezner (deceased) she graduated from Miquon High School and completed her undergraduate studies at Temple University in Philadelphia. Motivated by her love of animals, she earned a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. After practicing small animal medicine for several years, she signed on with Save the Chimps in Alamogordo, NM. There she worked to help chimpanzees, abused for years as subjects for medical experiments, recover and resocialize. As staff vet she made many trips transporting chimps from Alamogordo to Ft. Pierce where Save the Chimps had created an environment far more humane and natural for Jocelyn’s 300 chimpanzee friends. During her fifteen years there, Dr. Bezner became a widely acknowledged and well-respected primate expert. She was an ardent advocate for all living beings and consulted with animal rights and rescue organizations around the world. Jocelyn was a scholar, a mentor, an avid surfer and world traveler with a wicked sense of humor and a practical sensibility that made her a treasured friend and valued confidant. She is survived by her brother, Mark Bezner, her sister, Laurie Bezner, her niece, Grier Nori (Ernest), her nephew, Jesse Persico, her partner of many years, Tristram Colket, her lifetime friends, Merlin Wisswaesser and Meg Agnew as well as her cousins Carol McGilloway (Bob), Kathy Bogle (Rick) and Lisa Zawislak (Chris). She was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Caitlin Bezner, and sister-in-law, Kuniko Yasuda. She loved and was well loved by an incredible group of friends. She is greatly missed and will be for a long time to come.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Jocelyn’s honor to Center for Great Apes.

Arrangements are under the direction of Haisley Funeral Home, Fort Pierce, Florida. An online guest book may be signed at www.haisleyfuneralhome.com
