John L. Walker

John L. "Johnnie" Walker, 85, died on August 31, 2011 in Fort Pierce, Florida.

He was born in Dorchester County, South Carolina on May 26th, 1926, to Margaret "Maggie" Butler Miller Walker and John Walker. He grew up in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and after graduating from Wilkinson High School as salutatorian of his class, completed a tour of duty in the Army during World War II. He returned to Orangeburg, and graduated from South Carolina State College with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1949. He earned a Master’s Degree in 1954 in Administration and Supervision. Committed to education and public service, he served in administrative roles at principal at Voorhees School and Junior College in Denmark, SC; and at Claflin College in Orangeburg. He served as principal of Lincoln Park Academy in Fort Pierce from 1962 to 1970. He furthered his career as the Dean of Financial Aid/Veterans Affairs at Brevard Community College until he retired in 1992. He was committed to public service, volunteering and serving on numerous boards of community organizations including Hospice of the Treasure Coast. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; the AMVET Post 15; American Legion Post 171; and the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He was active in St. Simon the Cyrenian Episcopal Parish.

He is survived by his wife, Jessye, sons Shomarka and Marlon, daughters Yvonne and Sia, daughter -in-law Caroline, brother Adam, sister Linda, 2 grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and lifelong friends.

Services: Visitation will be held on Friday, September 9, 2011 at the Parish Hall of St Simon the Cyrenian Episcopal Church at 17th and E Streets from 3:30-4:15 pm. This will be followed by private Links and Kappas ceremonies until 6:00pm when the Litany of the Dead will take place in the Church. A service will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 1:00 PM at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Burial will take place at Crestlawn Belleville Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
