John Seward “Jack” Fielden died at age 86 in Ft. Pierce, Florida on June 30, 2010. Jack worked at the University of Alabama (UA) from 1971 until he retired in 1993. He served as Dean of the College of Commerce and Business Administration from 1971-1980 and as University Professor of Business Communications from 1980-1993. Under his tenure as Dean, the Commerce Executives Society was formed, the annual Alabama Business Hall of Fame was initiated and the Alabama Board of Visitors was established.
Before coming to UA, he served as Dean of the College of Management at Boston University from 1964-1971, was an Associate Editor of the Harvard Business Review and served on the faculty at Harvard University, Purdue University and the University of Illinois.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Jean Dickinson Gibbons, who was Russell Professor of Applied Statistics under her retirement in 1995.
For the past several years Jack and Jean Fielden have graciously volunteered their services to Indian River State College. It was through their book Throw me the Bottom Line…I’m Drowning in E-mail that the Pioneer River Press was launched. They also serve on the advisory board for the Lifelong Learning Institute and have both been facilitators for several classes.
In Jack’s memory, friends who wish may make a contribution to Indian River State College (c/o Foundation Office 3209 Virginia Avenue, Ft. Pierce, FL 34981).
