John W. Brandon

October 2, 1919 — March 27, 2010

John W. Brandon, aged 90, died March 27, 2010. He was a native Floridian and was born in Riverview, Florida. He graduated from Brandon High School and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1937. He served in the Special Service Squadron in Central America and was a Veteran of World War II.

Mr. Brandon graduated from the University of Florida, College of Pharmacy in 1953 with high honors. He was a member of the Rho Chi Honor Society and received the Borden Scholarship Award. His outstanding record earned him the Lehn and Fink Gold Medal for excellence in pharmacy.

He descended from a pioneer family which came to Florida in the 1850s and settled in the area which now bears the family name, Brandon, Florida. When he moved his family to Ft. Pierce in 1954, he went to work as a pharmacist for the Silver Palace Pharmacy. He remained there for about ten years. He left that position to open the first SuperX Drugstore in Stuart. He later returned to open the first SuperX Drugstore in Ft. Pierce where he was manager-pharmacist. At the end of his career he did relief work for Canaday’s Pharmacy.

He is survived by Rose, his wife of 66 years, by a daughter and son-in-law, Johanna and Jeff Borden of Chicago, and by a son, John W. Brandon, III, who resides in Ft. Pierce. He is also survived by twin grandchildren, AnnaRose and John William, IV of Ft. Pierce, by grandson, Mark Holmes of Colorado, sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Saunders of Norfolk, Virginia, and by numerous nieces and nephews.

When it came to social affairs, he was a loner, but when it came to his family or anything concerning his work as a pharmacist, he was a “people” person. He loved to read and was an avid fisherman during his younger years, even building his own boat for his family outings. He loved traveling throughout the United States and was a consummate craftsman, producing fine wood and leather work.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Treasure Coast Hospice, 2500 Virginia Avenue, Ft. Pierce, FL 34981 or to the First United Methodist Church, 616 Orange Avenue, Ft. Pierce, FL 34950.

When I am gone, release me, let me go
You have much to see and do
You must not tie yourself to me with tears
Be happy that we had so many years.

So grieve awhile for me, if grieve you must,
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It’s only for a while that we must part,
So bless the memories within your heart.

I won’t be faraway; I’ll be everywhere
Though you can’t see or touch me, I’ll be there
And then when you must come this way alone,
I’ll greet you with a smile and say; “Welcome Home”.

He will be truly missed by his family and friends. His life will be celebrated in a private family ceremony.
