Julie Sample Percy

December 18, 1947 — August 27, 2006

Julie Sample Percy, passed away at her home in Port St. Lucie on August 27, 2006. Julie was born on December 18, 1947, in Ft. Gulick, Panama. She was the daughter of Major and Mrs. Charles W. Sample and the younger sister to Anne. Julie and her family traveled with the United States Army as they were stationed in North Carolina, Georgia, California, and Germany. In 1960 the Sample family settled in Ft. Pierce, the birthplace of her father Charles.Julie attended Dan McCarty High School graduating in the class of 1966. She married her high school sweetheart, Jim Percy, in August of 1967. Jamie and Jason, their two sons, arrived in 1969 and 1974.Julie was always an active member of her church and the community. She and her family joined Indian River Presbyterian Church in 1971 and she filled many roles within the life of the church. Julie’s affiliation with Lawnwood Elementary began in 1975 as an active parent, volunteer, and substitute teacher, before becoming the Media Center Clerk for the last seventeen years. She was twice named Employee of the Year, in 1998 and again this past year. One of her greatest pleasures was making scrapbooks for her family. Her tireless artistic talents have left loving and lasting memories for each of them.Julie and Jim took every opportunity to travel the globe visiting 35 states, Canada, Europe and the British Isles. However, it was her numerous visits to Scotland and time spent with Jim’s cousins, Billie and Jesse Young, which provided the most special and lasting memories. For certain, Julie’s greatest joy has been watching her sons mature, marry and have their own children. Julie had the chance to share with us that her greatest gift of all was her wonderful grandchildren.Diagnosed with a very rare cancer in 2002, Julie has fought a courageous battle for the past four years. Everyone has continued to be amazed by the grace and dignity with which she accepted her challenge. She never complained nor neglected her responsibilities with her family, her church, nor her job. Throughout her illness she was a continual inspiration for everyone who knew her.Julie is survived by her husband Jim; her son Jamie, his wife Laura, and their two daughters, Ellie and Rowan; her son Jason, his wife, Lorene and their son Jase; her sister Anne Newhouse; her Aunt Anne Lee Whitlock, numerous loving cousins and relatives.Memorial contributions in Julie’s memory may be made to Treasure Coast Hospice, 10360 South Federal Highway, Port St. Lucie, FL 34952.
