Kenneth N. (Ken) Harris, 73, born December 29, 1936 in Washington, D.C.; passed away November 24, 2010, in Port St. Lucie, Florida. He was a resident of Fort Pierce, since 1972, coming from Homestead, FL.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Dorothy E. Harris of Fort Pierce, FL; twin sons, Kevin (Pam) Harris of Fort Pierce, FL and Kenneth (Echo) Harris of Tallahassee, FL; granddaughter, Jessica Johnson of Orlando, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Catherine Harris and brother, Billy Harris.
Ken was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy, received his education on the G.I. Bill and later obtained his MBA from the University of Miami in 1981.
Ken’s career spanned 35 plus years in the Nuclear Power industry. Beginning in the 1960’s at Combustion Engineering, Windsor, Conn., followed by
Connecticut Yankee Nuclear Power Plant. In 1969 Ken began his career with Florida Power & Light and retired as Senior Vice President of Nuclear Operations after 25 years of service. During his tenure with FP&L he played a key role in the start-up and operations of both Units 1 and 2 at the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant. He spent the majority of his career at the St. Lucie site and considered it home. Ken was recruited as part of a team assessing the damages and procedures needed to stabilize the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant in the days following the 1979 incident. Later he became the first site Vice President at Turkey Point Nuclear Plant. He was an instrumental part of a management team that won the Deming Award for quality, the first and only time the award was given to a company outside of Japan.
After his retirement with FP&L, Ken continued to work as a consultant in the Nuclear Power industry throughout the U.S. and Canada including Pacific Gas & Electric, Tennessee Valley Authority and Carolina Power & Light.
Ken was a 50 year Mason at Fort Masonic Lodge #87. An Amara Shriner, he belonged to the St. Lucie Shrine Club, was a Shrine Clown and paraded in many parades over the years. Ken was a member of the Pelican Yacht Club and the NRA.
His heaven on earth were the mountains in Nantahala, NC. He is loved and missed by his family, friends and many nuclear power associates.
