Kenneth Jay Richards, Sr.

April 30, 1952 — January 2, 2025

Vero Beach

Kenneth Jay Richards Sr., age 72, passed away peacefully of natural causes on January 2, 2025, in Vero Beach, Florida. Born on April 30, 1952, in Stamford, Connecticut, Ken, or simply known as Itchy, lived a life filled with dedication, passion, and craftsmanship.

Ken was the beloved son of Bruce T. Richards and Isabelle (Santora) Richards. He was preceded in death by his brothers Gary and Peter, but is survived by his cherished sisters, Kim Gerbert and Gail La Russo. A proud father and grandfather, Ken leaves behind his children Ken Jr., Nikki, and Jordan, as well as his adoring grandchildren Auren, Logan, and Kendrix, with whom he shared many fond memories building things together.

Ken graduated from Nuernberg American High School while serving the U.S. Army. He served with honor from 1972 to 1974 in West Germany. His time in the military instilled in him a deep sense of duty and commitment, which he carried into all areas of his life. Upon returning, Ken became a master carpenter, a profession that he poured his heart into for over four decades, from 1976 until his retirement in 2021. His skills as a carpenter were unmatched, and he took pride in every project, including the home he built for his family—where he raised his children and created a warm, loving environment.

Ken’s love for his family was only rivaled by his love of hobbies. He was a true “workaholic,” always busy, whether it was working with his hands or indulging in his passions. His free time was often spent on the golf course, umpiring softball games, listening to music (such as the Beatles), attending concerts, and often at Jordan’s gigs. A lifelong fan of rock ‘n’ roll, Ken found joy in the rhythm and melodies that filled his life. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles, a pursuit that matched his adventurous spirit.

Ken believed in giving back to his community, volunteering for the Special Olympics and inspiring those around him with his generous heart. He was always willing to lend a hand and leave a lasting impact on the lives of others.

Though he had a tough exterior, Ken was a man who carried his love for his family deeply. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and he was happiest when building projects alongside them.

Ken's legacy lives on in every home he worked on, every heart he touched, and every memory he left behind.
