Lanette "Poogie" Slay Egers

December 9, 1928 — January 10, 2022

Lanette “Poogie” Slay Egers, 93, of Ft. Pierce, FL passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her children on January 10, 2022. She was born to Robert and Marguerite Slay on December 9, 1928 in Ft. Pierce, FL.

She graduated from St. Anastasia Catholic school and would go on to be a life-time parishioner and Eucharist minister of the Church. She had 6 sisters and 2 brothers. She grew up in the historic “House of 7 Gables”.

She grew up during WWII, when her family-owned Sunrise Dry Cleaners, which was patronized by many U.S. Coast Guard service members that were stationed in Fort Pierce. In addition to working the front counter at the dry cleaners, she and her sisters were USO girls. Lanette earned the honor of being “the girl that danced with a thousand soldiers” during the years of the war. Which was part of the greatest generation.

While working at the dry cleaners, Lanette met the love of her life, Edward “Cookie” Egers. Originally born in Biloxi, Mississippi, Edward moved to Fort Pierce when he was stationed there in the Coast Guard. They were married on June 2, 1948 at St. Anastasia Catholic Church, and had 11 children together. They were married for 67 years. Lanette went to work outside of the home when her two youngest children started preschool at Head Start, where she took a job cooking for 150 children every day. She retired when her youngest child graduated high school. She later returned to work at Sun Bank as the cook in their private kitchen. When she decided to finally retire, she enjoyed volunteering at Fairlawn Elementary where she had several grandchildren in attendance. She also spent time at the Moose Lodge where she enjoyed organizing events.

She is survived by 8 daughters and 2 sons: David (Carol) Egers, Pam (Raleigh) Watts, Nancy Juengling, Janice Addison, Marguerite “Moggie” (Chip) Radebaugh, Eddie (Maureen) Egers, Tammy Vargesko, Shirley (Ron) Monterroso, Betty (Doc) Stephens, and Maria (Lee) Lassiter; 24 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward “Cookie” Egers, her son, Patrick Egers, sons-in-law, Hans Juengling, Dave Vargesko, Donja Addison, granddaughter, Marla Egers, grandson, Ronnie Watts, and grandson-in-law, Patrick Price, her 2 brothers, Laurence “Hunk” Slay, R.E. Slay, and her 6 sisters, Liz, Elodie, Margie, Shirley, June, and Evelyn.

Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 15, 2022 at 1:00 PM at St. Anastasia Catholic Church, Fort Pierce. Burial will follow at White City Cemetery.
