Lou Johnell, 86, died December 8, 2006 at home after a long and dignified battle with illness. He was born July 11, 1920 in Wilmington, Delaware. He moved to Port St. Lucie in 1961 and settled in the city of Ft. Pierce in 1966, where he was employed for many years by the City of Ft. Pierce as the Building Inspector.In 1985, Lou retired as an accomplished Carpenter/Contractor and has been a 60 year union member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.In his life he strived to do his best in all he did, especially as a husband and father. With his love of sports, Lou was a record breaking track star in high school, earned many awards as a bowler and enjoyed many years as a golfer as a member of the Indian Hills Country Club.Lou died as a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus, BPOE Elks & Loyal Order of Moose.
He proudly joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served in the Pacific War Arena on the USS Belleau Wood CVL-24/LHA3 during WWII in the U.S. Navy’s construction battalion.Lou Johnell was recognized for fighting in nine major battles to help preserve peace & freedom for us and future generations.He is predeceased by his wonderful wife June whom he was married to for 64 years, his father Louis J. Johnell (Giovanelli), an Ellis Island immigrant, his mother, Rose, and two sisters, Irma & Gloria.Survivors include his son Glenn Johnell of Rivera Beach, his daughters and sons-in-law, Sandy and George Gugliemelli of Sebastian, and Sheryl and Jim Oliver of Sebastian. He had five grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.Donations may be made in his memory to the Humane Society.
