Ludwina Smith
Ludwina “Winnie” Smith, 96, died October 22, 2009 after a short illness. She was born in Camden, New Jersey, lived in Albany and Buffalo, NY, Chicago, Atlantic City and on North Hutchinson Island for 22 years coming from Lake Worth.
She graduated from Camden Commercial College in New Jersey having studied Business and Commercial Law and worked as Executive Secretary to the President of Campbell Soup Company during World War II. Much later she worked briefly for a publishing company as a proof reader. She was a Girl Scout leader during the Korean War, sending packages to the troops. She was a life long swimmer, and enjoyed traveling, playing bridge and walking on the beach.
Survivors include her daughter, Carole Robertson of Shamong, New Jersey, daughter and Son-in-law Donna Smith & Gregory Sawka of Ft. Pierce and her Grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth R Burnham and Margaret Ann D’Alessio of New Jersey and Bretland Smith-Sawka and Ashlyn Smith-Sawka of Ft. Pierce and 6 great-grandchildren in New Jersey.
She was preceded in death by Donald M. Smith, her husband of 56 years, her parents, Hugo Karl Mattes and Creszencia Mair Mattes, her brother Hugo Mattes, and 2 sisters Josephine Pile and Bertha Saylor.
There will be a visitation St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church on Friday, October 30, 2009 3-4PM with a service at 4:30 PM. Arrangements are under the direction of Haisley Funeral & Cremation Service.
