Mary Grace Viramontez passed away on Oct. 9, 2024, in Fort Pierce, Fla., at the age of 70, due to a tornado that took place during Hurricane Milton. She was born on Nov. 23, 1953, in Detroit, Mich., to mother Maria Barrios, active church leader, and José Moreno Viramontez, World War II veteran and welder. Mary was one of 12 children, including 11 daughters and one son.
Mary earned her Masters in Social Work from the University of Michigan and was the second employee of Covenant House of Michigan. Her 40-year career as a social worker primarily focused on serving at-risk youth. As a well known Detroiter whose community advocacy inspired people around the world, she built a legacy as a passionate caregiver and encouraged students to stay off the streets and out of gangs. Her legacy lives on through the lives she’s influenced. After retiring and moving to Florida, she enjoyed her last act, which included vacations abroad, motorcycles and spending time with family and friends.
She is survived by her sons Adam, Jose and Antonio; daughters Maria Teresa, Maria, Stephanie, Isabel and Veronica; 29 grandchildren and eight sisters.
