A funeral service for Mavis Merita Weech, age 85, of Port St. Lucie, Florida, formerly of Alice Town, Bimini, Bahamas, will be held on Friday, March 28th, at 11:00 a.m. at Haisley Tribute Center in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
Mavis is survived by her daughter, Shelly Coleman; her son, Rick Weech; son-in-law, Richard Coleman; daughter-in-law, Bibi Weech; grandchildren, Christopher Weech, Stephanie Caldwell, Katie Coleman, and Ben Coleman; and great-grandchildren, Sophia Caldwell, Emmalyn Caldwell, and Cayson Weech. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Elaine Sweeting, Agatha Howard, Eleanor Spindler, Jessie Underwood, Elsie Weech, and Barbara Checkley; brother-in-law Hank Weech; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives; and a lifetime of dear friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, Ludington and Sarah Lowe; her brother, Rispah Lowe; sister-in-law Margaret Lowe; and her loving and patient husband, Frederick C. Weech, Jr., who departed this life six years ago—just weeks shy of their 60th anniversary.
Born on the island of Green Turtle Cay, Mavis spent her early years living throughout the Abaco Cays. She fondly recalled growing up in Green Turtle, Sand Banks, and Cherokee Sound, Abaco, at various times. She moved to the island of Bimini in the late 1950s when her brother, Rispah, became the island’s commissioner. It was there she met Freddy Weech, whom she married in 1958. They were blessed with two children and made their home in Bimini. In 1968, Freddy relocated the family to the United States. Mavis devoted herself to being a homemaker, lovingly raising her children until they began families of their own.
After Freddy's retirement, the couple split their time between their beloved island of Bimini and a peaceful country home—complete with a lake—in the serene community of Malabar, Florida. They cherished their retirement years, especially the time spent with their grandchildren.
In 2014, Mavis and Freddy moved to Port St. Lucie to be closer to their son as his health declined. Freddy passed away in 2018.
The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the staff of Renaissance Senior Living and VNA Hospice for their compassion, support, and care during Mavis’s final days.
