Melvin L. Armstrong

June 16, 1930 — November 8, 2005

Melvin (Mel) L. Armstrong, 75, died November 8th unexpectedly at his home.He was born in Ashtabula, Ohio, son of Leroy and Mae (Dewitt) Armstrong. He has resided in Port Saint Lucie for the last 12 years.Mel graduated in 1947 from Ashtabula High School. While working he continued his education and received his Bachelors Degree in 1976 from Kent State University. He was a 26 year Veteran of the Ashtabula Police Department, retiring as Captain. He then served 13 years as Chief of Adult Probation for the City of Ashtabula. In addition, he taught Criminal Justice in the local high schools for three years.Leaving Ashtabula in 1993 and moving to Port Saint Lucie, Mel took a three year hiatus before going to work for the City of Port Saint Lucie as a Police Service Aide, until the time of his death.He was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, bowling and scuba diving. He also spent many years doing woodworking crafts.He is survived by his wife, Sandra W. (Latimer) Armstrong of 48 years. He is also survived by his son, Melvin K. Armstrong of Port Saint Lucie, daughters, Connie McKay of Westerville, Ohio, Karen Fratis of Ashtabula, Ohio and Denise Lamson of Kingsville, Ohio, daughter-in-law, Julie Armstrong of Fort Pierce, ten grandchildren, Jeremy, Justin, Aaron, Shawn, Melissa, Kelley, Julie, Jennifer, Jeremy and Heather. Mel also had six great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Armstrong.He was an active member of the Community United Methodist Church in Fort Pierce.Memorial contributions may be sent to the Community United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 3114 Okeechobee Road, Fort Pierce, FL 34947.
