Michael J. Picano, Sr.

Michael Jeffrey Picano, Sr., 65, passed away October 18, 2011.

Mike was a native of Erie, PA and a resident of Fort Pierce, FL since 1956.

Mike was a graduate of Dan McCarty High School, where he played baseball and football. He graduated from Indian River Junior College, and the University of Florida, earning a BS in Advertising and a BS in Public Relations.

He was an educator in the St. Lucie County School system for 36 years.

Mike attended St. Anastasia Catholic Church and was active in local youth sports for many years, having coached T-ball, Little League, Babe Ruth League, and John Carroll High School baseball teams. He was a past president of the Babe Ruth League, St. Lucie County Junior Athletic Association, the Treasure Coast Gator Club, past treasurer of the American Little League, and founder/president of the St. Lucie County Youth Football Organization.

Mike was a former member of the John Carroll High School Advisory Board, the St. Lucie County Port & Airport Advisory Board, and the St. Lucie County Recreation Advisory Board. He was an active member of the Fort Pierce Central and John Carroll High School booster clubs, as well as a co-signer on the Port St. Lucie High School football stadium loan. Mike was a proud member of the Fort Pierce Elks Lodge 1520, where he had many friends.

At the time of his death, he was former owner of the Varsity Sport Shop.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Sandra Park Picano, a daughter, Lara DiMartino, son-in-law, Jay DiMartino of St. Augustine, FL, and a son, Michael J. Picano, Jr; siblings and spouses, Sherry and Bruce Center, Mary Anne and Ric Huck, as well as John A. and Kathy Picano of West Palm Beach, FL. He adored his three grandchildren, Sofia and Indie DiMartino and Kai Paddock-Picano, and leaves behind many nieces and nephews. His special buddy, Huckleberry, will miss him.

Services: A visitation will be held on Friday, October 21, 2011 from 4:30-7:00 PM at Haisley Funeral Home Chapel, with an Elks BPOE 1520 Service at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 1:00 PM at St. Anastasia Catholic Church.
