Murray McKinnon (Mac) Hamilton passed away after a brief illness at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute on May 13, 2008.
Mac was born May 29, 1943, and was reared in Gastonia, NC where he attended public schools. In 1964, he graduated from Kings College, Charlotte, NC. Professionally, he studied organization management, economic development, and marketing at the University of Georgia, Texas Christian University, Syracuse University, and the University of Notre Dame through the US Chamber’s Institute of Organization Management.Mac moved to Fort Pierce in 1983 to become Executive Director of both the St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Development Council. Mac served Chambers of Commerce for 28 years in Fort Pierce, North and South Carolinas, and Virginia. In 1993, Hamilton joined the senior staff of the Fort Pierce Utilities (FPUA) as Manager of Public Affairs & Governmental Relations. Before his retirement in 2005, Mac had several titles including Director of Marketing and Customer Services and gained regional and national environmental conservation and community service awards for FPUA.
Active over the years in various professional and community organizations, Mac is former Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and Heart Institute; a past Director and Paul Harris Fellow of the Fort Pierce Rotary Club; a member of the American Legion Post #40; St. Lucie County Conservation Alliance; United Way Pillar; Central Florida Blood Bank 7-Gallon Club; Seven Gables House Advisory Board; St. Lucie County Agriculture Advisory Board; and is a former member of the St. Lucie County Hospice Advisory Committee to establish the first Hospice House in St. Lucie County. He is a member of Ft. Pierce First United Methodist Church where he has been a member of the choir and board. After his retirement, he volunteered at Treasure Coast Hospice House.Mac is survived by his wife of 44 years Henrietta Shi Hamilton and their four children: Kimberly Hamilton Smith (David) of Fort Pierce, Florida; Henrietta Hamilton Renninger (Chris) of Naples, Florida; Murray McKinnon Hamilton, Jr. (Sonia) of Orlando, Florida; and Mary-Julia Hamilton Camplin (Dustin) of Boynton Beach, Florida. Additional survivors include their nine grandchildren: Thomas, Andrew and Anna Smith; Jonathan and Jacob Renninger; Megan and Samuel Hamilton; and Kayla and Emily Camplin.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Treasure Coast Hospice, 2500 Virginia Avenue, Suite 202, Fort Pierce, Florida 34982 or to First United Methodist Children’s Home, 51 Main Street, Enterprise, Florida 32725.
Services: Visitation will be held on Friday, May 16, 2008 from 5-7 PM at Haisley Funeral Home. A service will be conducted on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 1:00 PM in the funeral home chapel.
