Nancy Myers Landis

November 24, 1925 — April 30, 2021

Nancy Myers Landis died recently on April 30, 2021 at her home in Vero Beach, FL after a short illness, with her children by her side. She was born on November 24, 1925 in Elizabethtown PA and spent her childhood in that town. She graduated from Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, PA with a major in chemistry in 1947, and then worked as a laboratory technician at Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster, PA until her marriage on June 24, 1951 to Richard M. Landis MD (who died on March 4, 2019). Dick and Nancy raised their family in Lancaster while Dick practiced general medicine.

Their four children survive them: Suzanne Landis MD, MPH, husband William McKenna MD from Asheville, NC; Joanne Law, husband Doug Law of Harleysville, PA; Kathryn Landis, husband Chuck Setchell from Arlington, VA; and David Landis, wife Veronica Landis of Bowie, MD. She also leaves behind 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, all of whom loved FaceTiming with their “Nana”.

Nancy and Dick retired to Ft. Pierce, FL and then moved to Indian River Estates in Vero Beach, FL in 2016. For decades she volunteered at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute as a lab tech, at local hospitals, and at nursing facilities. Nancy loved playing bridge all her life, and it was one of the few pleasures (online, even) in her life during the COVID pandemic. She is famous for her 3 No Trump bid after all the three other players have passed! She inspired at least one of her children to learn bridge so that they could partner together. She also enjoyed swimming either at the beach or at the on-site pool. And she so loved to laugh with her friends at dinner time! She continued to “dress for dinner” with bright colors and scarves until the end of her life. Her membership and friendships through the First Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach nourished her soul.

Mom, Nana, we will miss your infectious laughter, your positive attitude toward life, playing bridge with you, and running beside your electric scooter while you “gunned” the engine on outside “walks”.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday May 22 at 11 am at Indian River Estates East Building in the Multipurpose room, Vero Beach, FL.

In Lieu of Flowers, Memorial Gifts can be made to First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach, FL 520 Royal Palm Blvd, Vero Beach, FL 32960 or https://onrealm.org/FirstPresbyteri54478/Give .
