Patrick J. Sermo, “PapaPat”
Patrick J. Sermo, “PapaPat” of Port Saint Lucie, Florida passed away February 25, 2020.
Pat was born on March 19, 1948, in Detroit, MI. to Arcolino and Rose Sermo. He lived in Michigan with his parents and brothers Michael, Arthur and Pete until 1972 when he drove to Florida for a vacation and never went back, so the story goes.
Pat was the epitome of a free spirit and marched to the beat of his own drum. He was a collector of all, and we mean all, things especially sports memorabilia. Pat loved camping in the Florida Keys and anything related to the beach. In his younger years, Pat was an avid surfer and windsurfer, spending countless hours at Deerfield Beach. During his time in Deerfield Beach, Pat acquired the Guinness World Record for stacking the most surfboards, 104, on his beloved, sticker-covered VW bug at Island Water Sports. When not at the beach, Pat enjoyed attending sporting events and playing poker. In 1994 Pat became “PapaPat” with the birth of the first of 4 grandchildren. PapaPat enjoyed taking his grandchildren on adventures to places such as the beach, Lion Country Safari, Sea World and Gumbo Limbo. He had a gift of taking simple items and making them magical. Pat was known and will be remembered for his long hair, mustache, Hawaiian shirts, flip-flops and contagious laugh.
Pat was a hardworking and loyal employee. Until his passing, Pat worked at the Walmart on Gatlin Blvd for over 10 years. Prior employment included Electrolux and Pompano Racetrack, where he met his companion of 40 years, Katherine.
Pat is survived by his companion, Katherine Ryan; children, Kathy (Vincent) Enea, Brian Cawley and Brigette (Michael) Uhrich; grandchildren, Kayla, Hannah, and Bryce Enea, and Wyatt Uhrich; brothers, Michael (Judy) Sermo and Peter (Kim) Sermo; several special nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Arcolino and Rose (Valente) Sermo and younger brother Arthur Sermo.
Per Pat’s wishes, cremation has occurred. The family will have a private memorial at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Haisley Tribute Center 2041 SW Bayshore Blvd Port Saint Lucie, Florida 34984. An online guestbook may be signed at
