Paul A. Mons, Jr. left this world on April 20, 2023 at JFK Medical Center with his daughter Rochelle by his side.
He leaves behind his wife of 38 years, Elaine; his twin sister, Patricia Jordan; daughter, Rochelle (Kenny) Larson; son, David Mons; Precious Granddaughter, Victoria Mons; step-son, Michael (Diane) Mason and his beloved Chiweenie, Harley.
Paul A. Mons Jr, formerly of Crete, IL before moving to Ft Pierce, FL, was born July 9th 1932 to the late Lucille and Paul A Mons Sr. in Harvey, IL. Paul graduated from Thornton High School and worked for the Harvey Tribune for many years before serving in the US Army, Seargant, in the Korean War, where he received the combat wounded Purple Heart medal along with numerous awards/medals. Paul was a true Patriot, a man devoted to his country & became an advocate for Veteran’s rights.
He later worked as a carpenter at Warren Mineau's cabinet shop. Paul was then Director of Buildings and Grounds at Homewood -Flossmoor High School. Paul spent his last 20 years in the workforce as a National Service Officer and Dept. Adjutant for the Military Order of the Purple Heart at the VARO in Chicago, IL serving all Veteran's before retiring. Paul was a champion for Veteran's, working closely with all of the Illinois Veteran's Homes and VA Hospitals. Paul was a Past Chapter Commander with the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter #252 as well as a Past Dept. Commander and Past National Commander with the MOPH. He was also a lifetime member of the VFW, DAV & the ELKS. Paul was very active in South Chicago Heights as the guest keynote speaker every year at the Veteran's Day & Memorial Day services & participated in the Harvey 4th of July parade every year while he lived in Homewood, IL, rain or shine, sick or well.
Paul had been very active for many years in his Methodist church as an assistant to the Reverend, reading scripture on Sundays, volunteering around the church, belonged to the Marryweds club & running the annual Fun Fair. He always made time for his family, playing in the pool, filming family activities as well as coaching his son's little league team at Izaak Walton followed by a trip to Dairy Queen. Years later he was thrilled to watch his granddaughter Victoria play at the same park, still followed by Dairy Queen. Paul was known as the Veteran who picked the flag up off the floor, risking arrest, during a disputed student art display at the Art Institute of Chicago. Paul loved all animals & treated his pets like part of the family. His dog Harley was his pride & joy.
He was a great Father, provider, Papou/Grandpa and a kind & generous gentleman that truly loved his family & friends. He would always do whatever he could to make somebody laugh or smile & would greet and talk to strangers anywhere. He always did what he could to help others.
Paul was so happy & proud to have Victoria as his granddaughter & enjoyed pitching in to take her for the night & bring her to school the next day which always made them both very happy spending cherished time together.
Paul touched so many people's lives with his kindness and wisdom & will be greatly missed by all.
